: Life is a battle and as we overcome one battle, another emerges. Psalm 34:19 captures this fact of life vividly. It tells us that many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivers him out of them all. Righteousness does not immune a person from the battle of life. Both the righteous and the sinners experience the battle of life, but the righteous, according to the promise of God, shall overcome all his battles. The battles of life come in different shapes, colours, degrees and in diverse manners. They do not discriminate and have no regard for your status. The battle of Jabez started from his birth. His mother placed a curse upon him the day he was born by giving him a name which put him at a disadvantage before his siblings and relatives. Jabez means sorrow. It was not clear why his mother gave him that name but from the prayers he prayed, we saw that his life was miserable until he called on God who delivered him. Why do bad things happen to good people? If you have often pondered about that problem, you are not alone. There is only one answer: God allows bad things to happen to His people only if He sees a way of turning the bad into a greater good. Romans 8:32, our Memory Verse today, reveals that God specialises in bringing the best out of unpleasant things that He permits to happen to His children. Someone asked, "Why did God Himself commend Job's righteousness and still permitted satan to afflict him so terribly that he lost everything except his soul?" The answer is that God permitted it because He knew He would bring greater and more glorious results out of it. He gave Job, after his trial, twice what he had before and his faith and patience are useful lessons for us today. In John 9, the disciples of Jesus asked who had sinned for the blind man to have been born blind: his parents or the man himself? Jesus told them that no one sinned and that God only permitted the man...

John 9: 1. And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 2. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3. Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. 4. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. 5. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. 6. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, 7. And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. 8. The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? 9. Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. 10. Therefore said they unto him, ...

2 Kings 2: 11. And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12. And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. 13. He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; 14. And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over.
